William Wordsworth described Lake Ullswater as “the most romantic lake” and it is easy to see why.  The Duke of Portland Boathouse nestles on the shores of lake Ullswater and has been holidaymakers first choice for romantic proposals, honeymoons and anniversaries for decades.  But, you don’t need to stay in the boathouse to appreciate the romance of Cumbria, stroll hand in hand through woodlands, watch the sunset over the Solway Coast, toast your days adventure from the top of England’s highest mountain, hire a rowing boat and explore the lake just the 2 of you or relax at a couples spa treatment.

The romance continues into your accommodation, snuggles in front of a roaring wood burning stove, watch the twinkling stars from your hot tub and sleep under a canopy of traditional oak beams.

Romantics young and old are certain to feel the love in the Lake District.

Why Choose the Lake District? Sunsets

Cumbria is bordered by the Solway Coast to the west and the sunsets can be spectacular.  Head to one of the many beaches along the coast to take in the magnificent view and watch the skies set on fire as the sun dips below the horizon.

The coast is not the only place to witness the sunsets, stand on a lake jetty as the last of the suns rays cast sparkling light across the lake or head to one of the mountain summits and watch the sun dip behind the lakes and fells in front of you.

Where ever you choose to watch the sunset, it can be truly magnificent as the skies are set alight in an orange glow and linger a while as the shaddow of dusk starts to descend.

The Lake District is aptly named after the many lakes which call it home.  The larger lakes Ullswater, Derwentwater, Windermere and Coniston each offer cruises, sailing you around the lake, some also stop at various points allowing you to get off and explore a new part of the lake.

There are also a number of smaller lakes; Bassenthwaite, Grasmere, Thirlmere, Wast Water, Buttermere, Crummock Water, Loweswater, Brothers Water and Haweswater, each having magnificent scenery and walks circumscribing them.

No matter which lake you choose there is watersport opportunities in abundance, try canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, wind surfing, yachting, wake surfing or hire your own row boat or charter a yacht.

Subject to licence you can also fish for pike and coarse fish in many of the larger lakes.
