Bassenthwaite Cottages
Bassenthwaite Lake, the most northerly of the Lake District’s lakes, offers a peaceful escape surrounded by stunning fells. The charming village of Bassenthwaite sits about 1.5 miles from the shoreline, tucked into the countryside, while the vibrant market towns of Keswick and Cockermouth—both just 6 miles away—provide an excellent selection of shops, cafés, pubs, and restaurants.
The village itself is full of character, with a gentle stream often visited by ducks, a welcoming pub serving hearty meals, and a children’s playground—perfect for families.
This area is a paradise for walkers and nature lovers. From your doorstep, you can explore iconic fells such as Skiddaw, Lord’s Seat, Ullock Pike, and Binsey Fell—famously described by Wainwright as “a simple walk for a big view.” The Cumbria Way lies within 3 miles, along with the scenic Dash Falls. Nearby Dodd Wood offers trails for all abilities, leading through beautiful woodland to Surprise View and the Osprey Viewing Platform, while the historic Ashness Bridge is a favourite spot for photographers.
Bassenthwaite Lake itself remains wonderfully unspoilt, with no boating zones to protect the wildlife. If you wish to take to the water—whether by paddleboard, canoe, or sailing boat—a permit is required, and fishing is subject to both a lake permit and an Environment Agency rod licence.
