Keswick Cottages, Lake District, Cumbria

The market town of Keswick sits in the northern part of the Lake District and visitors flock to Keswick cottages for many different reasons.  Nestled on the banks of Derwentwater, sheltered by majestic mountains Keswick offers stunning scenery combined with shops, bars, restaurants and activities for young and old.

Keswick Main Street, with its recognisable Moot Hall, is lined with shops ranging from outdoor, gift and chocolate shops, dog friendly pubs, tea rooms serving delicious cream teas, takeaways and hotels.  A short walk from the main street, passing Hope Park and the Theatre by the Lake brings you to the shores of Derwentwater.  Take a lake cruise and admire the mountains towering above from the comfort of the lake cruiser, or hire a rowing boat and head to one of the islands for your own mini adventure.  There are a number of water sport centres dotted around the lake and you can try a number of different water based activities including canoeing, paddle boarding and windsurfing.

Walkers delight at the opportunities the fell tops offer around Keswick, all offering stunning vistas from the summit.  For those ticking off the Wainwrights, you have Skiddaw, Helvellyn, Catbells, Glaramara, Latrigg, Great Gable to name just a small number right on your doorstep.  For those who prefer gentler walks the Borrowdale Valley or the Keswick to Threlkeld railway path is perfect for little legs and those who find the climb to the summits challenging but still gives you that same satisfied glow at the end of the day.  Within a short drive Dodd Wood and Whinlatter Forest offer woodland adventures, with Whinlatter being home to Go Ape and some of the best mountain bike trails in the area.

On the days the fells don’t beckon there are wonderful sights and adventures waiting for you, head to Ashness Bridge and marvel at Surprise View, stunning what ever the time of year.  The Bowder Stone in the Borrowdale Valley finds climbers practicing their skills at the bottom but invites you to climb to the top for a birds eye view of the area.  Relax in Hope Park, enjoy a picnic whilst gazing out over the lake or enjoy a game of crazy golf or putting.  Fitz Park offers tennis and a BMX track and nestles on the banks of the River Greta.

Keswick Golf Club is located at Threlkeld, with every hole having an impressive mountain backdrop and fishing, subject to license, is available in Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite for those who prefer a more relaxing sport.

Amuse the children with a day at the Pencil Museum, Puzzling Place, Indoor Rock Climbing or the Lake District Wildlife Park at Bassenthwaite.  Bassenthwaite Lake itself is a short drive from Keswick and the pretty village of Bassenthwaite is worth a visit.  Head south out of Keswick and you will find Grasmere home of William Wordsworth, Ambleside and Windermere, all easily accessible by car or on the local buses and time spent exploring these Lakeland towns is a must during your visit to Keswick.
