Tucked just off the A66 between Penrith and Keswick, The Old Chapel sits a few minutes from Threlkeld and enjoys stunning views across open countryside, with Clough Head to the front and Blencathra rising behind. Originally built as a Wesleyan Methodist chapel in the early 1840s, it was sold by the congregation in 1947 and has since been thoughtfully renovated and extended. These updates have been carried out with care, preserving its original charm while creating a welcoming home-from-home.
Set entirely on the ground floor, the spacious layout makes it an excellent choice for guests who prefer to avoid stairs. The cottage is perfect for relaxing year-round—whether enjoying long summer evenings in the garden with a glass of wine as the sun sets over the fells, or curling up beside the wood-burning stove during the cooler months.
Keswick is just a 15-minute drive away, while Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere can all be reached within less than an hour via the scenic route through St John’s in the Vale. The peaceful country roads of the Eden Valley are also within half an hour, making The Old Chapel an ideal base for exploring the very best of Cumbria.
Inside, the lounge features comfortable sofas arranged around a Smart TV and wood-burning stove, with access to the sunroom—an inviting space for family evenings or unwinding with a good book. The sunroom itself offers cosy seating and lovely views over the garden and surrounding fells. The dining kitchen is well equipped with an electric oven and hob, fridge, microwave, dining table for shared meals, and an additional seating area with a TV. A separate utility room houses a washing machine and tumble dryer.
The characterful master bedroom boasts a beamed ceiling, a king-size bed, patio doors opening onto the garden, and an en-suite shower room. There is also a double bedroom and a twin room, all designed to ensure a restful night’s sleep. The family bathroom includes a shower over the bath, washbasin and WC.
Electricity, bed linen and towels are all included, with a cot and highchair available on request. Private parking is provided for up to three cars. Outside, the idyllic cottage garden is bordered by a stream and teems with wildlife, including birds and red squirrels. With seating areas and beautiful fell views, it’s the perfect spot to relax and soak up the surroundings.
The Old Chapel is conveniently situated just off the A66, directly opposite a well-loved pub known for its hearty meals and selection of local ales. The nearby village of Threlkeld is only a five-minute drive away, where you can access the old railway path leading all the way to Keswick.
Keswick itself, just 6 miles away, offers a wide range of shops, restaurants, bars and attractions. In the other direction, Penrith—often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Lakes and Eden Valley’—is around a 10-minute drive and provides excellent amenities including supermarkets, shops and eateries.
For scenic days out, Ullswater and Grasmere via the picturesque St John’s in the Vale, can be reached in around 15 minutes, with Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere a little further on, perfect for exploring the southern Lake District. Keswick Golf Club is also close by, just 2 miles away.
With its central location, Threlkeld is an ideal base for discovering Cumbria, with a variety of attractions—including museums, galleries, family-friendly activities and watersports—all within easy driving distance.
